By a majority vote on Tuesday, November 14, the Modesto Irrigation District (MID) Board of Directors approved a 7.5% electric rate increase for 2024 and a subsequent 5.5% increase for 2025. A Power Cost Adjustment designed to reflect fluctuating power supply costs will also be calculated and applied monthly to customer bills in 2025. These rate increases will apply to all MID electric customers and are effective January 1, 2024 and January 1, 2025.
The electric rate increases followed the adoption of the 2024 budget and the release of a detailed cost of service study.
More than half of MID’s budget is power supply, and this is where the District and the rest of the electric industry has experienced the most cost pressure. Despite making budget cuts and deferrals to mitigate cost increases wherever possible, a gap between MID’s revenue with current rates and expenses remained. The adopted rate changes were needed to sufficiently cover costs and preserve MID’s good financial standing and service reliability.
The 2024 rate increase is in addition to the 3.5% 2024 rate increase adopted in 2022. Beginning in January, residential customers will see their monthly bills increase by around $16 per month, including the monthly fixed charge moving from $30 to $31. In 2025, residential customers will see their bills increase by around $9 per month, including the monthly fixed charge moving from $31 to $32. Commercial and industrial customers will see the increases in their varied rates.
Rate details and the cost of service of service study are available on MID’s website.
