MID Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Rebate Program

MID’s New Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Rebate Program offers an exciting opportunity for electric customers to take their homes and businesses one step beyond conventional energy efficiency – and get cash back from MID. Solar PV systems may also be eligible for a federal tax credit (subject to change – check with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service).

Solar PV rebate program details
See Rebate Program packet for complete details.

  • Any MID electric customer is eligible
  • System peak output capacity, minimum - 1 kilowatt (kW)
  • Systems larger than 30 kW  - subject to MID approval
  • Rebate amount - $2.80 per installed alternating current watt, per customer account, not to exceed 50 % of total project costs up to 30 kW
  • Rebate amount (for public agencies) - $3.30 per installed alternating current watt, per customer account, not to exceed 50% of total project costs up to 30 kW

Does a solar PV generation system make sense for me?

Solar PV systems generate clean, renewable energy from the sun. PV systems don't pollute the air, don't produce greenhouse gasses (believed to be a contributing factor in global warming) and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Solar PV systems usually generate power during peak periods, and that helps reduce strain on California's electric grid.

However, PV systems are relatively expensive and not applicable to all locations. PV systems require unobstructed access to the sun, and not all locations or structures are suitable for installation. The investment in a PV system can cost several thousand dollars even after rebates and tax incentives are considered. Cost recovery from a PV investment can take 15 or more years.

Customers who would prefer a faster payback are strongly encouraged to consider traditional energy conservation measures first since the payback period is typically two to six years in most cases. Such measures include high efficiency air conditioning and appliances, low-e dual-pane windows, extra insulation and high efficiency lighting.
