SYSTEMS PROGRAMMER - SENIOR

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under general direction from the Assistant General Manager Information Technology, to assist in planning and implementing changes to computer hardware and software systems for the District, provide system level programming support, and ensure availability of all IT systems.

This is an exempt position and is part of the Management and Confidential Group.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Direct and assist in investigation and isolation of computer system problems; direct the daily operations of IT computer room systems; formulate and implement solutions to identified system problems; identify and evaluate projects using computer technology; identify and evaluate software to meet user needs; install and configure software selected to support system users; evaluate and select communications equipment for use with the District's computer systems; consult with management and recommend possible solutions for upcoming projects; evaluate and tune system performance; document programs and procedures; establish future hardware requirements and prepare plans for the timely acquisition.

OTHER RELATED DUTIES

Aid in the preparation of the annual department budget; other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Any combination of education, experience, knowledge and abilities may satisfy the necessary minimum qualifications. A typical way to obtain the education, experience, knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, or closely related field, with an emphasis in data processing.

Experience: Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in data processing, communications or related field.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of data processing concepts to include software, hardware, and documentation practices; programming languages; operating systems. Ability to provide support for the attachment of new equipment and devices; teach and explain the functionality and capabilities of new and existing software packages to system users; identify projects which could be facilitated by application of computer technology; assist users with specific and immediate problems; efficiently identify, isolate and implement solutions to computer system problems; work cooperatively with others.

Special Requirement: Must have a valid California Class C driver license.
