Water Report

The Hetch Hetchy system in the upper Tuolumne River watershed is just about full with 350,000 acre-feet currently in storage, according to Walt Ward, MID Assistant General Manager of Water Operations. Once the upper reservoir system fills completely, the rest of the water will come downriver into our own Don Pedro Reservoir. April to July runoff is estimated at 66 percent of normal or 870,000 acre-feet. This figure will probably be revised downward to about 750,000 acre-feet. Water elevation at Don Pedro is 768 feet compared to 794 feet on the same date last year and about 783 feet in an average year. Although water storage should soon begin to stabilize around current levels, the reservoir definitely won’t fill in 2008.

River flow at La Grange, the official measurement point where Turlock/Modesto irrigation district compliance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission minimum flow requirements, is presently about 80 cubic feet per second (cfs). Together with the City and County of San Francisco, the irrigation districts will be working to maintain the flow rate at an average of approximately 100 cfs for the remainder of the summer. It is hoped that proactive flow management will help maintain a water temperature range favorable to rainbow trout, while mitigating any potential negative impacts during this critical dry year. TID/MID will also take the opportunity to collect as much data as possible for future decision-making.
