Radiant Barrier Facts
- A radiant barrier is a metallic foil material (usually aluminum) designed to block (reflect) radiant heat transfer.
- Radiant barriers are most commonly installed in the attic attached to the roof rafters.
- Can be installed by a contractor or self-installed by the homeowner.
- Reflectivity is the measure of how much radiant heat is reflected by a material. It is expressed as a number between 0 and 1 or as a percentage between 0 and 100%. The higher the number, the greater the material’s ability to reflect radiant heat.
- Radiant barrier reflects radiant heat energy instead of trying to absorb it. What does this mean in your home? In the summer,
up to 93% of heat gain is radiant. Reducing the amount of radiant heat transferred through the ceiling can reduce your cooling
costs by approximately 8%.
- When installing a radiant barrier, be aware of moisture issues. To learn more, go to www.doe.gov and search “radiant barriers.
